I Have the original recording of Grace but I'm wondering if the Legacy remaster is better and worth getting, or if it is another case of the recording company "inproving" the sound by giving it the smushed up loudness treatment.

It's much clearer IMHO...definately worth it. The second CD is also a good one. I say run, don't walk, to the record store!!
