YELLOWJACKETS   The best contemporary jazz band on the planet in terms of talent and chemistry.

(all releases with Bob Mintzer are sensational!)

Start with "Four Squared", "Mint Jam"

Hopefully not too off topic; this was the most recent jazz thread I saw.

I'm looking at getting Miles Davis' Miles In The Sky. As ever, it's not that simple! There are three readily available CD releases (on this side of the pond):
-- 1992    original Columbia CD release (?), using original analogue tapes
-- 1998    re-released with extra tracks
-- 2008    no obvious difference to 1998 release; what's the point?!

It's not clear whether the (original) tracks have been remastered again. Any idea whether the sound quality is equivalent across all three?

Thanks.

I've never gotten into the classic old jazz but here's some Smooth Jazz artists to give a try -

Boney James
Hiroshima (has some good female vocals as you requested)
Paul Hardcastle (my favorite)
Tom Grant
Craig Chaquico
Jean Luc Ponty
The Rippingtons
Wayman Tisdale (yes the former BB player)
Lee Ritenour
Zachary Breaux

I think jazz is the most mis-understood genre.  The styles might be more vast than any other type of music.

I particularly think post 1980's jazz is more diverse than any jazz previous to it and also can be considered controversial, non-conforming and out of place because it cant be pigeon-holed into a time frame style or category.

If you like Big Band Jazz.  www.itrax.com is a great place to download quality recordings.  They don't have a lot at the moment, but the quality is some of the best I've heard.  You can also get the Blu Ray disc so you can see the performance as well.
