Jazz recommendations?

I know it's too much, but I can't resist. You've got me started. Here are a few youtube vids of Billy Boy:

Playing Dylan's Just Like a Woman on a Guild Songbird.

Eggradio On a Custom painted Telecaster body with a Jaguar neck and humbucker in the bridge position.

Amarillo Barbados on a chambered spruce Klein with solid rosewood neck.

What Do We Do? Same guitar as Eggradio above.

That Was Then On a Gibson ES 446.

If you watch any, please watch them all and do a search on youtube for yourself. There are other Gems.

If you are only going to watch two, please watch What Do We Do? And That Was Then. Two of my favorites by him. I've learned both songs note-for-note on the guitar. For a couple of years I was absolutely obsessed. I suppose I still am, but I've cooled off some. I have all of the same effects as him and a few of the same guitars.

For any other Frisell info, please pm me. A lot of people want to know how he generates loops and what kinds of delays he uses. I have them all and I know the settings. If you are a guitar player and you are curious let me know.

The Bad Plus are remarkably consistent, imo. My fave of theirs is probably Give, which has the strongest melodies and compositions (although I believe I am in the minority on this opinion.) If you like Vistas, I really don't think you can go wrong with any of their albums,.

This also goes for their side projects as well, like Happy Apple and Ethan Iverson's solo records.

They also have a FANTASTIC blog. http://thebadplus.typepad.com/dothemath/

My study of jazz history (although my training is in history in general) has led me to the conclusion that many cities and may people led to the creation of jazz. However, I do not think that there is any doubt that New Orleans first and foremost as a primary originator of jazz. Without Chicago, Kansas City, and St Louis we absolutely would not have the jazz we have today. Without New Orleans, there is a chance we might not have jazz at all. Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong are exhibits A and B (you pick which order) for the existence of jazz today. Both were born in New Orleans.

As for allmusic and Herbie Han****. Again, neither come close to anything remotely resembling a serious academic source. Wonderful musicians have been wrong about millions of things, I certainly have no need to catalog that. Allmusic is a casual music site for information and reviews (which is different than serious criticism.) Anybody with a serious devotion to history, discography, or serious musical criticism will tell you this. Everyone needs to be aware of the fact that there is a big difference between 'guy who knows stuff about jazz' and a jazz historian, somebody who is trained in history and who deals with primary source material for creating narratives. Slim Pickens, your 'sources' are not jazz historians. At the very least, the people who Aman has quoted are.

Disagreement, while always present and sometimes necessary for greater understanding, should never turned into what it has in this thread. People clicking this are looking for Jazz Recommendations, not an internet flame war. The very existence of jazz is too fragile to get caught up in this garbage.

I made my point.

I thought this thread was for Jazz recommendations. Slim and Aman's petty fights and insults would be enough to keep people AWAY from jazz if somebody want recommendation.

That's simply arrogant and presumptuous. My entire reasoning behind the spectacle was to show how there are lots of people today who try to protect jazz as some sort of museum exhibit - some ancient art form to be cherished and protected. My comments on jazz were meant to steer jazz newbies in a more positive direction. It is too bad we remain to have jazz elitists out there who pledge their support to unhealthy musicians such as Wynton Marsalis and dangerous "historians" like Ken Burns, and argue their positions with similarly sub-standard reasoning objects. It's not like these people are stopping the artists from doing what they want, but it's certainly skewing the perception of their art to both the general public and the general jazz demographic. Also, considering that I posted quite a few posts not dealing with Slim Pickens at all, I think your comments are unwarranted and unnecessary. Remember that this mystery member only posts to say ridiculous, unwarranted things about me. Every post Pickens has made deals directly with "challenging" me. This is a reflection of his own character, and not on jazz, its musicians, or anything/anybody of the sort.

The debate should remain in order to show the deformity that modern jazz faces today. There's simply too much assuming, too much ignorance, and too many people who blindly follow what other unqualified people say, to assure the continuing health of jazz as a respected art form. Because of such people, the best jazz is being produced not in America, but in Europe and, dare I say, even Japan! What would the black elitists and Ken Burns think of that?
