I was listening to some system test tracks someone on this forum posted here and found I really like this song (Fred Hersh Trio - Played Twice). I guess it is jazz but all don't know how to classify it. So does anyone know of some good bands with that funky piano, bass, drum trio sound. I really like it. It reminds me of Ginsberg or Kerouac era beatnik music. I would love to find some more of this. Thanks.

Its an old Thelonius Monk tune, and no one sounds quite like Monk so idiosyncratic is the style. He is one of the great geniuses of jazz, and the best thing is to go straight to one of his CDs, and probably best to try the old Riverside recordings like Monk's Music or Brilliant Corners.

These are not piano trio settings however, and as Monk mostly worked within a quartet setting, I am not too sure of what albums might have him with just bass and drums. One I do have is Riverside Trios which has Monk leading a piano trio, but doesn't have him playing his own music.
