Alright, a while back I used to go to some Jazz concerts at my school, and I really loved them, and I didn't really pay much attention to what they were playing, but I remember liking it, it was more of a 'classic jazz', not new age/acid jazz or whatever they call it now adays, but what I'm looking to know is, I'd like to start buying some of these classic jazz cds, but I have no idea where to start, If you could provide with me possibly a website, or some do's/don't of jazz buying, etc etc, it would be much appricated.

About a year ago, I was in the same spot you are. I had heard some classic jazz and liked it, but had no idea where to start.

Here's a link to a bunch of links to "Best Jazz CD" lists. I researched all of these and looked for CDs consistently recommended. I also used allmusic.com to see how they rated the CDs I was considering.

I ended up buying about 20 CDs to start with from BMG Music (ended up costing me about $100, including some freebies I got for joining). Now I've got a pretty good idea of what I like and am starting to round out my collection.

Here are a few of my favorite "classics." You can't go wrong with any of these:

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Thelonius Monk - with John Coltrane

Enjoy!

Three of my favorite record companies for hi-fidelity reproducton have a fairly large (and good) selection of jazz recordings. They are Chesky, Telarc and Mapleshade. All three offer sampler CDs that allow you to check out a song our two by their artists so you can get an idea of sound and style prior to commiting to an entire CD by someone new. All three are on-line and some even offer downloads of MP3s for you to sample.
