Let's get a list going.
I'm sure there are a bunch of good ones.
What I mean by Jazz/Prog Fusion are elements of both, but the music has to be wordless.

Recent ones I've found are:

Ozric Tentacles
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Gordian Knot
Brand X (Phil Collins' side band just after Post-Gabriel Genesis)

I don't know if Mogwai counts, but they're also instrumental rock.

Well, that was long ago, yet they are all classics...

... what comes to mind for now:

Chick Corea & Return to Forever - Return to Forever
Chick Corea & Return to Forever - Light as a Feather
Chick Corea & Return to Forever - My Spanish Heart

Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - Birds of Fire
Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - Inner Mounting Flame
Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - Apocalypse

Weather Report-Weather Report
Weather Report-Heavy Weather

Billy Cobham - Spectrum

... and also a lot of stuff by artists like Miles Davies, Stanley Clarke, Larry Corryell, Al DiMeola, The Soft Machine, Allan Holdsworth, Jaco Pastorius, Jan Hammer, Jean-Luc Ponty, Stomu Yamash'ta, Gayle Moran, Airto Moreira, Paco de Luciia...

Yeah, I'm reading, too. Big fan of a lot of recordings that have already been mentioned: Chick Corea/Return to Forever, Al Di, Allan Holdsworth, et al.

Check out Béla Fleck & The Flecktones - oustanding jazz fusion. A few of my favorites albums
Three Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Ufo Tofu
Live Art
Left Of Cool (some vocals but mostly instrumental)
Outbound

As far as instrumental rock goes, Godspeed You Black Emperor is worth a listen, too.

Godspeed, while at times beautiful, is a very difficult band to listen to. You have to be patient and virtuous in order to extract all of the entangled and enigmatic enchantment. I find myself rarely having the time or the patience to listen to even a full song of theirs, nevermind a full album. It all seems like too much energy for one measly man.

- Al DiMeola - Land Of The Midnight Sun; Elegant Gypsy; Casino; Splendido Hotel
- Gamalon - Gamalon; Aerial View; High Contrast
- Tony Williams Lifetime - Believe It!; Million Dollar Legs

I know of many, many more, but I've only listed cd's that I actually own and only the ones that I can remember without physically going through my collection.

regards

I agree, Trounce. It takes a special mood to break out Godspeed (and it doesn't help that they're extremely pretentious). But when I do have the patience to listen, it's usually rewarding.

Add California Guitar Trio to that list. Wow, these guys are good. Wow. Wow. WOW.

Get their rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' off their album 'Rock the West.' Amazing.

just wanted to add Bozzio/Levin/Stevens and Liquid Tension Experiment. both more projects (only 2 CDs each) than bands, but very very cool, especially BLS.

I'd suggest checking out Medeski Martin and Wood. They can play a number of different styles of jazz, fusion being one of them. These guys are a blast to listen to and they put on a fantasic live show - they can PLAY.

Every album is quite good, IMO. Check out 'Tonic' for some live acoustic stuff (an unbeatable recording - this blows my mind when listening on headphones), which would fit the topic of this thread.

Also, check out 'A Go Go' by John Scofield, who can play a mean jazz guitar. With MMW as his back up band, you have something REALLY special. This album was in my car CD player for 3 or 4 months. Straight.
