Since iPod appears on the same space as normal playlists I though you could create a smart playlist (playlist = NOT iPod).

Is there any way to display songs which are not on the iPod. I have a lot of smart playlists which update to the iPod and was wondering whether I leaving the good stuff out.

You have to load, update and sunc manually. That way you can keep a separate library in itunes.

Make a new Smart Playlist.

Choose Playlist -> is not -> "Playlist X" (one of your playlists)

Press the "+" button

Repeat for all of you playlists.

This should create a smart playlist (which you don't have to sync to you iPod), which will contail all the songs not in your other playlists.
