Ok, so I'm new to computer audio and don't really know what 16 bit, 24 bit or even 44.1khz is.

Anyway, here's my situation, I have a macbook pro connected to an Onkyo (tx-sr504) receiver using an optical cable. I was able to download some 24bit/96kHz samples from one of the links posted here. However, when I play the files I got using itunes (converted to apple lossless from flac), my receiver still says "PCM fs:44.1khz". What gives? I checked the song info and it does say "sample rate: 96.000kHz, sample size: 24bit". I thought if I played 24bit/96khz, my receiver should also read it like that, right? I looked up the specs of my receiver and it says "DACs - 192 kHz/24-Bit x 7". Can somebody explain to me how this should work? Also, how do I know if I'm outputting (?) bit perfect from my MBP? Any help is appreciated, I just want to understand how this stuff works.

Thanks,
Ron

Well, I think I got it. the output on my MIDI setup was on 44.1khz, so I just changed it to 96kHz and voila!

Ok, one more question. Is it ok if I leave the output to 24/96 if most of what I play are 16/44.1? Does it upscale and or just leave the 16/44.1 the same but will also output 24/96?

I've been wondering similarly for quite a while now. I can hear differences when I change the samplerate, and changing it depending on content is a bit annoying.
Does anyone know if there's a way to just disable any resampling?

Not at present, but rumors/industry gossip suggest that it will be a feature implemented for a future revision for iTunes (though I am under the impression that it won't be an iTunes specific change - more likely an alteration to Audio Midi or the way it handles data rates).

I have no personal opinion or worthwhile knowledge on the matter, but Benchmark have said (more or less) that setting Audio Midi to 24/96 will have an insignificant effect on audio when playing 44.1

i read that too. here:

Our measurements show that the iTunes 7.X SRC is so good that it should be inaudible (unless it is down sampling). An easy, all-inclusive setup is to set AudioMIDI to 96kHz before launching iTunes and keep AudioMIDI at 96kHz. This will lock iTunes at 96 kHz, which will upsample all sample-rates lower then 96 kHz. Setting the default to 96 kHz would allow playback of high-resolution 96 kHz 24-bit files without any processing, and would utilize the high-quality iTunes 7.X SRC only when playing low resolution 44.1 and 48 kHz files, or the rare 88.2 kHz file.

^Thanks for that quote! Yeah, I agree with vegaman, changing output format everytime can be annoying after some time.
