Whenever I use the "compilation" option in iTunes, it comes up as "compilation" in the artist column.
Is there anyway to rename this?

Reason being, I might have a DJ set where the DJ is one name, but the individual tracks are by seperate artists.
If I click on compilation, the DJ's name (or any of the sub-artists) will not come up in the "artist" column. Therefore, there is no way to identify who this is, unless I look under "albums".

"Get Info" on the track. Under the "Info" tab you can set both the "artist" and the "album artist".
In many cases iTunes gets it all correct, but sometimes I have to manually set one or the other.
"Artist" for the original artist of the track.
"Album artist" for the DJ/Producer.

Setting these should get things to come up correctly for you.
