I need some help here. What are the best cans that will block out some noise (denons do not block out enough for me. but I don't need IEM isolation.) and can run without an amp. hd 25, ath-m50, a700/900??? open to any recommendations.

HD 25 I II are great isolators. Shure 840 sound better with an amp but can be used w/o one. They isolate well too.

Shure SRH440's sound great unamped and isolate very well. However, I demoed them back to back with the 840's and I have to say the 840's are definitely a step up. You won't notice a huge difference without an amp, but if you ever decide to get one you'll be ahead of the game.

German Maestro 8.35D monitors will do the trick. Avoid Audio technica A900. Not much better then the Denons.

Hi,

Thought I'd jump onto this thread. Hope that is alright? I have a choice between the 840's and a pair of A900's and I'm wondering if people have an opinion on what to buy (there about the same price at the store). They would be used on an iPod listening mostly to Jazz & classical. Any opinions on what would be best?

The ATH-M50 isolate very nicely, and I use them from my nano all the time.

I had a pair of the HFi 780s for a while. The sound quality is good, and they have excellent isolation. I assume the 680s have more or less the same isolation characteristics, though I can't attest to their sound quality. The 780s were easy enough to drive without an external amplifier, though again the 680s might be a different story (35 ohm and 96 dB for the 780s vs. 75 ohm and 99 dB for the 680s).
