My thoughts exactly. Half of these suggestions involve plugging the stupid device to a TV. The Logitech that iriverdude suggested is the closest thing that matched my description. But i'm not sure if that thing has a built in HDD and remote.

I don't think that the USB out from the car stereo would be able to recognize a full sized hard drive as it can files on a USB stick. The hard drive requires a computer to talk to it.

x2. Why go to a lot of trouble? A DAP can be bought for not to much money, does exactly what you want, and you can easily onhook it and use it lsewhere, stand alone, whatever you want.

The only reason for going in this direction would be if you want to run from a CD player instead files from a computer or DAP.

If you want to listen to CD as a source then you could put a DVD/CD player as olblueyz has suggested to an amp and the headhpones, but if you want to have a hard drive for files, my 5th gen Ipod video has an excelent Wolfson DAC and 80 gb of hard drive, and there's the 160 gb 5.5 gen. why are you steering away from a computer? A Netbook or laptop as has been suggested is stand alone and a simple soundcard uprade with an amp or Dac/amp combo would be the same thing. and much less "Mickey Mouse" to put together.
