What if I used an M-Audio fast track USB as a DAC b/w my iMac and amp?

The unit specs at 24 bit / 48khz.

If I try it, how should I set my "audio devices" in the mac? 48k or 96 or 44,1K which is what I believed they are ripped at in itunes lossless? Also 24 or 16 bit?

Any other tweaks to get the best out of this OR is the DAC in the fastrack too low quality to even bother?

Thanks!!

Can't speak to the unit itself but as for settings... Regular CDs are recorded at 44.1 kHz / 16 bit. If you will only be listening to stuff that you ripped then there's your settings. Some might chime in about their feelings of upsampling, my personal preference is not to. I recommend you use Asio for a bit-perfect streaming to your M-Audio.

My guess is - you're set-up will do fine. Of course this depends on how resolving your headphones are.
