I'm a pretty much a newbie when it comes to audio. I've mainly used portable audio for most of my life and now I want something better.
I'm looking for something "neutral and "detailed". After reading a lot of reviews I think i'm going to take a chance with the nad 542, gilmorelite+ps, and sa5000s. Does that system seem like it will be give the neutral/detailed sound that I want? What cables will I need to buy? I'm also looking websites that can explain to me all the hi-fi lingo.

p.s.
price range is 1500 for everything and I mostly listen to metal

I don't think the SA5k will be too neutral without a balancing element like a tube amp, but might be just what a metal fan is looking for anyway.

I hear suggestions of M^3 + SA5k being a good pair.

I agree with the M^3 and SA5k. Without something warm the SA5k's sounded too harsh and thin to me but were beautiful with the M^3
