The bass is perfect how it is, and I don't want to lose any of it. However, I can't listen to them for more than 20 minutes without my ears getting sore since the earcups are so shallow...help me Head-Fi!

Beyerdynamic DT770 Velour Earpads @ HeadRoom

Put those on it. Also, search for the other people who have done the beyer pad mod.

Regarding headphones in general...

Pads from different headphones will change the sound.

A couple mods that may or may not change the sound of the headphones...

Some have added polyfill or cotton to the ear pads to make them fluffier.

And some have put foam or other materials under the ear pads to make them stick out farther.

I personally would not consider buying the Q40 without also buying the DT770 pads.
