Is there a closed "equivalent" of Beyer DT-880 PRO?

IMHO, I think you'll find that the closest sound signature is indeed the DT 770 Pros.

I am hoping that that is the case. I ordered the 770 Pros because the 880s come highly recommended but I prefer closed. Hopefully I will find out really soon (it is taking forever for them to be delivered!

You want 2005 consumer edition, not Pro.

Yes, yes, yes! Edition 2005, not Pro. In case of the DT880's, the Pro is the winner however the differences regard the soundstage and imaging only. The DT770 Edition 2005 uses the same drivers as the DT880's while the DT770's Pro use for sure different transducer coils - see impedance. The aural impressions that my friends reported confirm, the Edition 2005 is better than the DT770 Pro which are terrible sounding IMHO.

Wow, thanks everyone for the replies! I guess i'm not the only headphone maniac out there

I have definitely used the 770's for more than 200hrs, they were my main production headphones before I got the 880s. I have the 770Pro 80Ohm.

However, because of the power rating and design they're not suitable for live performance so that's why I ended up just using the 880s, since I needed a different set for live use anyway, and just deal with the background noise in different ways.

I had never heard of the Equation ER phones...I will try those. If they sound right, the construction looks like what I am looking for.

I'm still breaking in the ATH-M50s, in hopes that they improve some. They fit very nicely and have incredible isolation qualities.

About EQ'ing phones, i played with that for a while but I found that with most closed-back headphones I just couldn't get close to the high-end range of the 880's. The exception where the MDR-7509's. They seem to be capable of getting up there but I had to do some very drastic EQ'ing since they sound waaaay different from the 880's out of the box.

I have two sets of monitors, one pair of KRK's and another set of Mackie 824mk2. If I sit there and just swap headphones and A/B with either set the 880's seem by far the closest to both sets of monitors.

This is all just my personal experience/preference, very subjective of course.

Thanks!!

Too late. They are paid for and on their way (hopefully arriving today!)

Besides, I have read here that the Pro/80s are the bass monsters, are less amp dependent, and have tamer highs. I like all three of those characteristics!

Of course, if I don't like them as much as my K701s, it will be a moot point anyhow.

I think you made the correct choice. I really think you'll like the PRO's since you like bass. The consumer DT 770's are great cans but for bass lovers, there's just no comparison with the PRO's. Once you get them burned in, I think you'll be happy. Good luck and enjoy.
