Is the Sony MDR-E888 really that weak?

i thought so :p

also i think that the 888's need a lot of burn-in time, so IF you are disappointed you should wait till they have burnt in... i say this because when i got one of my later pairs i was quite disappointed and it wasnt what i was expecting...

yea, what i'm primarily concerned with is the durability. It has me thinking of whether these earphones would be worth it if it'd just break in a year or two. I want to mod them, but then i don't because it makes the earphones that much more vulnerable...

guess i gotta find a compromise between SQ and durability at this price for earphones. I'm still deciding between the e888 and the creative ep630. Very hard decision. lol, if they sold the creative ep880 for 50AUD, i'd seriously order them right now.

dont get the wrong idea though, these arent that fragile...you dont need to treat them like glass or anything... i think they should do you fine... the SQ is excellent after you break them in especially with the mod and it still isnt that fragile... ive had my last modded pair for quite awhile and have treated them quite roughly and they are still fine

Personally, these were a waste of money for me because of the build quality. Had them break the first day I got them. (diaphragm somehow blew up)

No, I don't listen to music loud. It just happened as there was a pop sound. :/

But other than that, go for them. I prefer the CM7's over these.

Don't worry, there's a 99% chance that it won't.

If you want durability... go for the audio technica CM7's. People say it rivals the sound quality of the E888's. And it's better built.

i probably would, although its more than twice the price of the e888 =(

The E888 is a refined earphone, I personally do not think that it will like you pumping it with bass-boost - its not that kind of design...

As much as I hate to say this, the Senn MX400 is probably a better choice... cheaper... 9x% of the sound, and can handle more bass input.
