Having said that, even if Vinnie charge me USD500 just for the mod I will still pay him - that's something similar to paying a specialist to do something special - the value of his handiwork is priceless actually. SQ wise, I believe no DAP that still runs lossy format can even scale up to iMod - both 4th and 5th gen.

Next 2 weeks I will have a chance to compare my iMod against some of the reputed Audiophile CDPs and DACs in a meet - simply because no DAP in existence can offer a fair challange to iMod - hard fact.

Does this mean that the iPod uses an incredible DAC?

Hey dood, I'm not argueing - I'm way out of my depth to do that! I'm new to this game and I'm just curious to what you guys are talking about.
I was just curious to why people would pay neigh on $1000 for a glorified ipod, and if it made it sound 2-3 times better than a standard ipod. So if it does - then great stuff!
biggrin.gif

I was also wondering if it sounded twice as good as stock Kenwood - If it does, brilliant too.

To be honest, I dont think you can ever get a real answer to your question. Because the question is flawed.

You are trying to quantify something (2-3 times better), that is qualitative.
How much better the iMod is than an iPod, will vary for everyone, even though the concensus is its better.

Just like how much an iMod is better than a Kenwood would vary as well. Although I have seen at least one person here claims the Kenwood is better.

The only real answers you can get is, in which areas is the the iMod better, and is it a small, or significant obvious improvement.

Also, like others have said, the same applies to price, one person may find $199 a fair amount to spend for such an improvement, another may find it a very expensive.

I have my 5 gen imod for more than a week now. It has about 90 hrs on it now. I have to say that it sounds mighty good and well worth the money I have paid for it. I cannot say that this is the best portable digital source out there because I have not heard everything. To make my decision to purchase it I had to rely on logic and the opinion of others. Vinnie's principle behind his imod makes sense to me - to get the purest signal possible by bypassing all the elements that can degrade the signal. Since the imod is not readily available to audition, I had to search the web for opinions by owner or people who have compared it to other products like it. For all products there are people who love it or hate it. The question for me was how many people are there in each group. In my search , I have found that many more people are in the love it camp. Is it worth the money? Only you can answer that question. This is only my opinion.

It sort of does. It uses a Wolfson DAC, which is pretty highly regarded.

But, like Burr-Brown chips, there are low end ones and high end ones.

True of course, but it's a pretty decent DAC nonetheless.

What sort of reputation do the Burr-Brown chips have? I am looking at a receiver that uses these DACs.

Why are you looking for a receiver that uses those chips that you don't know the reputation for?

That movie was "all that" and a bag of Burr-Brown chips.
