It makes no difference, and good headphone companies (don't bother with publishing this number (it's not even on Sennheiser's site).

Huuu...your HD565 are some years old, aren't they?

One of our german members once mentioned his ~12 years old HD560, which he stated to be dead neutral.

Apparently the 555 employs 40 mm drivers while the 595 uses 50 mm ones. Since the 595 is usually considered the better performer this absolutely has to make a difference. In the frequency response you can mainly see better bass and highs extension, I guess IMD also is lower.

The driver size is not the only variable changing between the 555 and 595, so I see no reason to think that it makes a difference. You could easily have a 50 mm driver that sounds considerably worse than a 40 mm one.

I have a pair of 565 but the 555 seem much more popular here

565s are fairly old by now. They were Sennheiser's top "consumer" model in the mid to late '90s, one step below the HD580 (and HD595's grandpa) so to speak. This series was somewhat darker sounding than the HD580, and at least the '535 I found to be somewhat cool-sounding in the mids (which, coming from the HD590, I didn't like much; now that I've slapped HD580 pads on, which fixed the boomy bass, I actually find them to be fairly balanced overall). What's nice about the old HD5x5 series is that drivers and pads are interchangeable with the HD580/600, so you can put HD580 drivers into a humble HD525's enclosure with pretty good results and use more comfy velour pads (it's all been done); on the other hand prices for spareparts tend to be high for the same reason.

It's hard to tell how HD565s would perform when compared to HD555s; it's been written that the HD555 is about on HD545 level, thus the '565 (basically a '545 with metal grilles) should be a wee bit better still.
