Is the Aeon #padgate finally coming to an end?

For portability, I like the economical ifi hip dac 2, drives the Aeon Closed X very well.

Although these cans aren't very easy to drive (91dB/mW and 12.5 ohms), hip-dac 2 manages them rather well given its size.

Was going to ask the same thing. The product doesn't suffer from any serious issues as is.
It isn't but they always made the technology found in their flagship models such as ether 2 more affordable with aeon line, so i'd like to see this meta material tech of Stealth and Expanse in Aeon 3, and most importantly it has one huge design flaw which is being hard to drive for compact, foldable headphones which i'd love to carry around without thinking about will my macbook drive it properly, can i use it on a plane with my lightning dongle or dap etc. Remember Audeze kept the same performance of lcd4 but made it really easy to drive with 4z version. Something like that. I can go on really, so much potential and room for improvement. Not that it suffers from anything, it's just a wishlist.

I used to think this way as well, but I'm not sure anymore that the tech is moving as fast as people think it is. Headphones from many years ago somehow still compete in their price brackets [HD600, etc], but it will be interesting to see where things go.

But yes, they could try to make a more sensitive headphone for actual portable use, that would be nice. Until that happens, the folding mechanism will always seem like a gimmick to me.

I hear you and I'd really like to see i.e. Susvara cans far easier to drive, but their specs don't make them a flawed design. Rather, sensitivity and impedance of these headphones are the 'price to pay' for their sound. I believe that a similar story is with Aeon and many other cans meant to work primarily with desktop systems. Besides, we'd have to ask Dan Clark whether Aeon fit for a dongle is even possible :)

Looks like this thread has not been active in around 10 months. But it seems like I have the "pad gate" issue myself. What is the best option? I bought a used set of Aeon 2 Noire. I want to make sure I am getting the best sound from them. But they do sound good to me so far. Maybe with new pads they would sound even better.

You can reorder replacement pads from DCA directly. That's what I did for mine last year. Just get the Perforated Aeon pads.

Yes I know I can do that. I'm just wondering if that is my only good option at this point.
