Is Sony's new X series overpriced

No no...the supplied phones have noise cancelling capabilities. If you want to have noise canceling by itself without a Walkman, Sony sells a product called the MDR-NC22. It used to sell for around 7000-8000 yen in Japan, that's where my $80-100 estimate comes from.

It has been discontinued now, there's a new model called MDR-NC33, it uses redesigned phones like the ones found on the new A840 series. The noise canceling effect is similar to the NC22.

I've been checking the prices for electronics in Bangkok, so perhaps you were referring to the X1050, not the 1060? Because a 32GB ipod touch doesn't seem to be $325 in Bangkok.

Thanks righteousball. I found out the earbuds supplied are the NC020LP model here

Also the prices of the x1060 model compared to a 32GB iPod Touch are here. It's a local dealer. Am I missing something and/or have been ripped off?

No no, what I meant to say is, $325 is very close to Apple's recommended price (10900 Baht) for a 16GB ipod touch in Thailand. The 32GB costs more than that.

I also check prices in Bangkok regularly, like the page you linked to,the X1060 costs 16000 Baht, but the X1050 is 13000 Baht, and much closer to the price you quoted.

Because you said

you seemed to have quoted the price for the X1050 (16GB) , but told us you got an X1060 (32GB). I was just wondering about that. If you got the 32GB for 13000 Baht, that's not a rip off... that's very good luck!

the sony players sell for more in japan. they are cheapest in usa unless things have vastly improved. sony's sauced down players generally sell for 2/3 of the japanese price in usa. but there is no way in hell i'd pay 600-700 for any dap unless, like the hifiman, it had a real, quality output section. if you had lived with sony for many years, you would know that while they can produce good sounding devices, most of it is just marketing tactic and unreal.

the x sounds good, but not that good.

Hey Shigz, did you get a chance to listen to the X again? The last I remembered was that you'd managed to test it for a short time in store, but only with the stock buds and the demo tracks? Just wondered if you'd had another listen to it since then

The Japanese X 32GB, which has better hardware, gapless and lossless is around $320 now. So yea, 600$ is extremely overpriced.

Well that $600 is Australian Dollars btw.

My reasoning is that it's a consumer device, not an audiophile device like the HiFiMAN. The closest competitor in features is the Z:HD, which is $100 cheaper. I think that, with the Z:HD price and the price drop for the iPod Touch 32GB, it makes no sense that the X series should be so expensive. I expect that Sony should drop the price, at some point in the near future.

EDIT: One thing I did forget about was the headphones that come with the Sony - I've read that they are much better than the crapola ear buds that come with other players. that could justify the higher cost, but that will still cause them issues with Joe consumer who doesn't know this.

Whats your definition of an Audiophile Device and Comsumer Device, so would you call Grado, AKG, Senns, Beyer Dynamic etc Audiophile Devices ? Or would you call a McIntosh Amp and Audiophile Device ? I mean a Consumer Device can still sound great like an Audiophile Device.

Never heard of the Z:HD who makes it ?

yes, luckily, i have been back in the mean time (a rough couple of days where work was lost - heaps of work) and it is a great player. i did not listen with the jh13pro, but the sensaphonics 2x-s is more than good enough... especially enough to draw strange stares.

very nice player that feels that sony are getting back some of their stamina lost since 1995, but not good enough to warrant the price in japan.

The price in Japan is ~320$ which I'll happily pay (gapless, lossless + other stuffs). But the crippled international version costs more!? It makes no sense whatsoever.

I am very interested in this player, But I feel the price is to steep. It has too many features I don't need or want in a DAP with killer sound quality.
Hopefully the NW-A8XX will be priced competivley, When it arrives.
