Is Reading from an External MicroSD Battery Consuming?

If I get an external SD card (in my case, for the Sansa Clip+), will reading from the card shorten the battery life? If it does, how significant is it?

*on the side, any advantages of getting a Sandisk SD, or does the brand not matter?
