Hi folks.  I am interested in getting an iPod Touch 6G 128GB and using it as a
digital transport. I have googled around and it seems that an iPad or iPhone can
be used simply by getting the standard Apple Lightning to USB Camera adapter.
However, I haven't had any luck locating a clear and definite answer to the question of how
the same can be done using the newest iPod Touch, which came out last year.
I have found some information about doing this with iPads and iPhones, as well as the following Head-fi article,
http://www.head-fi.org/a/all-about-ipod-touch-6g-as-digital-transport
but it doesn't really explain the situation; rather it provides loads of links to
information about different aspects of using the iPod as a source. It's not a howto or tutorial-type article. It even
provides a list of alternative cables to the camera connection kit, which is not
the same as the Lightning to USB camera adapter.
According to what I've read from Apple and talking to sales folk, it seems that
neither the iPad camera connection kit nor the Lightning to USB camera adapter
officially work with the iPod Touch 6.
So, I'd be very appreciative if anyone knows what the story is concerning
getting a digital signal out of the iPod via cable to a USB DAC and can explain
it to me.  I'm guessing it must be possible based on the above-mentioned Head-fi
article, but i'm left to infer that you have to buy an expensive audiophile
cable in order to do it and it's not possible with standard Apple accessories.
An expensive cable would defeat the purpose of upgrading to the iPod
Touch 6, as I might as well just go and get an iPad 128GB and cck or Lightning to USB camera adapter.  I'd prefer the iPod
because its significantly cheaper, smaller and, as near as I can tell, has
much better battery life when travelling (40 hours vs 10 hours).
Thanks in advance for any light that can be shed on this,
Cheers.
