Only when you have a bad compression and getting lots of artifacts which may be possible.

If both are converted from the same source, using the same encoder, then I don't see how that would be possible. But this is why blind testing is so important, because your mind can make yourself believe that you are hearing all kinds of things (placebo effect).

...especially the beliefs contained within said mind. I wouldn't discount statements read on message boards. However, it is wise to approach many with a healthy amount of skepticism.

With the variety of drives, encoders, etc... and if the 320 was CBR (Constant) and the 192 VBR (Variable) I suppose it could happen.
But it shouldn't.

The above point is key: if you are comparing to different recordings there are other factors, chiefly poor mastering, which overrule compression ratio.

Are both files encoded from the same rip? If they're just downloaded from somewhere, then for all you know, the 320kbps file could have been transcoded from a lower bitrate. Perhaps several times.

I've had audio paths with bottlenecks, showing up as some degree of edginess or harshness in the upper mids or highs, with which I'd preferred lower bitrate encodings. After making a change to deal with the issue of the rig, such as improved power, interference shielding, vibration damping, or the like, I have always preferred higher bitrate representations of the music. Perhaps the preference to lower bitrate material is a symptom that the rig is having an issue that needs to be isolated and dealt with. But, as always, each of us should trust our own ears. If it sounds good to you, it IS good. Enjoy it.

Sound worse is a completely subjective criterion, so yeah, it could. Is 192 closer to the uncompressed wav file than 320? No. Of course it's not.
