Is custom the way to go to upgrade?

Feb 9, 2009 at 11:01 PM Post #16 of 33
Pretty sure people here knew this but I never got the answer so just in case:

"It is completely true that the Super.fi 5 pros use the same drivers and
components inside that we install in the custom UE-5Pros.

The same goes for the Triple.fi 10 pro that is designed after the custom
UE-10Pro. Same components.

The difference between the two mentioned ( 5 / 7 pros)is that the 5 is a
dual driver with a single crossover and the 7 is a triple driver with a
two way cross over.

Sonic wise the 5 is pretty balanced and even where as the 7 has a boost
in the low end. You will receive more detail and better separation in
the 7's.

Hope this helps !"

UE customer service. So I'm going to be looking at either the 7's or the Westone ES3x.

The ue-10 were around way before the triple-fi as were the ue-5c and ue-5 or before the super-fi 5. Even if they do use the same driver, they are tuned differently.

In the Hearyourself.com thread there were only one or two people who had both the UE11's and also got the HY's. There was an obvious superiority with the UE's but whether it was worth almost three time the price was debatable. I have the HY C-3's. and I will never go back to Universals. The HY's are three driver/dual crossover configuration. The new Westone W-3's are a three driver/ Triple crossover configuration and the newest Westone customs are said to take advantage of the newer triple crossover design. But the Hearyourself.com's and Livewires(Dual driver only) are the only Customs under 400.00. The Freq's were in the same price range but are said to have gone the way of the dodo.HY's have excelent SQ, the most stock color choices,( Total Customs are very reasonable as well) free shipping, free impression kits(if you feel comfortable with doing them with the help of a friend), Basically the best bang for the buck. I would not own customs if it weren't for HY and like I said I'm glad I did. I know that the HY thread is long but worth the reading if your thinking of customs.

Thanks a lot boomy. I'll look what those people say about it then. I just hate their website. It doesn't render well ever. Safari or Firefox.

I remember that. I was so sure I was going to win the contest for them to name their newest little guy. And shoot, the ue10 is just 50 bucks more than the ue-7? I'll just consider the ue10 instead. I love listening to electronic and rock when I go portable and I don't want the bass to be lacking (since I love my 650's and I swear, after hearing the Shure e2c's long long ago, I became a little afraid all IEMs will sound like that). I rarely listen to my classical and bossa nova.

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f103/b...1/#post5053355 This thread intrigued me, since I've learned the ES EM3-pro has a warmer sound...according to their website.

Could try looking at sleek customs, i have Sf5's and thanks to the sleeks they now sound muddy and bloated with bass, sure there's more of it but it's muddled.

The sleeks are still settling in but has far more detail and the bass although less it has more weight and punch, works well with a wide range of music, good mids and fantastic highs with little or no sibilance.

They have been compared to a ue10 in terms of musicality and imo at $300 a bargain.

I will say for custom IEMs you will get the truth of that IEM should sounds like but for the price you have to pay.. I will say no thanks I will rather to buy 2 more other hi-end IEMs. BTW once you go custom you can't sell it anymore. it only worth the money if the custom IEMs will perform 30% better than the regular ones. just save yourself to going unreasonable "crazy".

Don't be fancy but poisoned. I heard enough about people compliant about they spend too much money on their gears but have not time to enjoy it. when the new one came out bought it listen for few days then put it away. have to find your balance here. it's the music you will enjoy not the gears. alot people lost their "balance" when they trying to get a new toy.

The Sleek customs are the only ones that you can even SEMI audition as they are built from the SA6 platform. So you can sample the SQ of an SA6 and have good idea whether you like the signature or not. I thought them to be very bright and lacking in bass even with the Bass++ ajdustment. Many many people really love the SA6 and feel that it's thier best universal iem choice<200.00. You will however need to decide how you want them tuned as once they adjust the innerds during the build process. it's a done deal. they cannot be user adjusted with filters and bass plugs as the SA6's can.

Maybe you should just spend the little extra for the ue-11.

I need to stop hearing voices like this. It's been happening a lot lately. However, $250 is different than $50, and I don't know how the ue-11 sounds. Time for even more reading. Of course, I'm still looking at other ones that may be a bit more colored like stated in my previous post.

I'm not worried about things like selling it. That's a moot point for me.

If I went for "quantity over quality" a lot of things I'd have wouldn't be here that I demand. My mac would become two laptops with a quad-core processor, et cetera.

I'm not worried much about balance because the times I'm not listening to music seems to be when during meetings, eating and sleeping. With a soundtrack coming way for a book and watching over the people who do sound for some of the videos we put up, I barely have time to NOT listen to music.

If you are looking for a more colored sound stay away from the ue-10. You should ask ue how the ue-7 compare to the ue-11. When I was upgrading from my ue-5c I talked to them about the ue-7 and ue-11 and they advised me to go with the ue-11. I was looking for a fuller sound with more bass than my ue-5c wit great highs and the ue-11 fit the bill perfectly.

"In regards to the three different models that you have mentioned with your criteria, I would reccomend the 7 Pros.

The 10's are completly flat without any coloring or shading added. They will not give you the bass that you are looking for and they will sound to shrill in the high end.

I would not reccomend the 11's either as the mids and the bass is very nice / but it is utilizing the high driver from the 10's.

The 7's have the most headroom which is great for Rock and will have more punch in the low end of that of the Super.fi 5 Pros. The soundsatge is nicer with the added mid driver and the extra crossover and will work nicely with any genre.

Hope this helps !"

Thanks UE. Looks like the UE7 is the best one of them I should look at for my musical tastes.

Well looks like the 7's are more your style. I wanted great highs with full sound and great bass.
