I read that there is a DAC chip in the lightning adapter itself, meaning I am assuming that the signal coming out of the port on an iPhone itself is digital, not analog. Can anyone confirm this? I am just trying to think through some things and this question is relevant. Thanks

I think to get digital from the newer i-devices you need the camera kit. If you use the lightning to 3.5mm adapter you get the analog signal which can be used for further amplification.
