I use a Dell Expiron Windows 7 laptop connected to my DacMagic via USB. Connected to the DacMagic, via its optical connection is the digital output from my Cambridge Audio DAB tuner fed by an external aerial. The DacMagic is connected to my Creek headphone amp.
If I use:-
BBC iPlayer - Listen live - BBC Radio 3
and tune my DAB player to Radio 3 I can compare the sound of each.
To my ears the iPlayer sounds "weaker" i.e. less volume and less body. I have the iPlayer volume set at 11; the highest value. I have compared the sounds during the day and evening; always the same difference.
Perhaps my terms are incorrect but shouldn't I get very similar sound from my laptop and DAB player as the two signals are digital until the DacMagic process them?
