Since Apple is very secretive about their components and there are dramatic differences between ipods of different generations I think its perfectly reasonable to wonder if there can be differences between ipods of the same generation but different production runs.

You're forgetting that within hours of the release of any ipod, someone has opened one up and posted high resolution pictures of the internal components online.

You're also forgetting the entire industry of ipod repair.

If apple were changing internal components in a significant way between production runs, you'd have probably already seen websites describing the hardware differences.

There are 3 or 4 versions of the sansa fuze, though, not even including the 2nd generation fuze. Not that I've been able to tell the difference between 1.3 and 1.46 fuze boards aside from the silkscreen.
