Just yesterday I decided to send in my iPod mini after it being broken for over a month.

Well I go through the steps and finally I land on this page where it says my iPod Warranty has expired... I falsely marked the date as 14 of July 2006. But it still said it was expired and it asked me to fax in reciep if it really wasn't out of warranty.

So, is this because of the discontinuation of the Mini or what?

I'm guessing that since the Mini got discontinued they would know that I had it over a year.

If I had a iPod Video for a year and don't register it until it breaks, would the same thing happen? If I kept it for 3 months and register it on the 3rd month, would I still get 12 months of my warranty if I falsely state the date of purchase?

I think I might get Nano when it comes out in 6 or 8gb... but I also might even try the D-NE20... So what do you guys think?

IIRC, I think it is useless to register it 3 months after you have purchased it, since Apple keeps track of the iPods through their serial numbers. But I could be wrong

Yeah... Maybe they tracked the date that I purchased my Mini or something... Anyone have any other experience?

I just learned that my dad's mini broke the night before it's last day of warranty. I brought in in yesterday, without receipt or UPC(sent in for rebates, don't know where parents stored the copies). The guy at the apple store typed in the serial, knew my name and the purchase date, and handed me another one on the spot(the HD was bad, and he didn't want to waste the time diagnosing it and coming to the same conclusion I did).

So, it seems to be all handled by serial #, and you can't really forge it(not that I'd condone doing such a thing, even if possible).

It's tracked by serial number if you bought it from an Apple Store, so they know when the warranty ended. My sister's boyfriend had an iPod he treated pretty harshly, and the hard drive started dying after about nine months. We told him over and over to get it repaired. I finally asked him to give me the serial number and found out the warranty had expired the day before, and Apple was not willing to make any sort of exception. They charges about as much to repair out-of-warranty iPods as a new iPod costs, so he now has a nice paperweight.

What McBob says is quite true. I bought the extended warranty package along with my original purchase two years ago and just received a new replacement 4G iPod (my 2nd replacement). So, your Mini is definitely replaceable if only the warranty was still intact. They required me to give them proof of purchase (receipts) too.

You didn't happen to buy the iPod on a credit card with extended warranty protection did you? My Visa extends manufacturer warranties by up to a year, which is pretty handy.

No. I bought the AppleCare for iPod package, which extends the warranty to a total of 3 years. Brilliant isn't it!

I bought mine at a Visions store, which is pretty small compared to Future shop if you know what I mean.

Does anyone else think that it's because the Mini is discontinued that they just assumed correctly that my iPod was a year old? I don't think they would have gotten the serial number... but of course I could be wrong.

...applecare for ipod is 2 years from date of purchase, not 3.

to the OP;
Apple tracks every ipod it ships by serial number, if it's purchased directly from apple, the warranty info is pretty accurate. With authorized resellers (compusa, best buy, etc), they estimate based on when the product was shipped to that reseller. In your case, you may be getting short changed a bit on your warranty based on that estimation and the only way to get all of your warranty is to get apple a copy of sales receipt. hope that helps.
