SOOOO this is my first ever head-fi post so hi lol. but im here to ask a question, im getting a pair of ATH M50's from my gf (she bought me a pair how sweet i know) and i have an kinda broken itouch 2nd gen and i kinda want to sell it ( there is a few dead pixels i think) and i uset to have a ipod classic or video i cant remember ( till some one stole it out of my locker at school never lave anything in there now) so i wanted to know what would be a better thing to get, i might get a portable amp and play around with lostless i think its called files. and i have and old jvc reciver and 2 older bose speakers i use and i might get a utility out from the 30pin connector of the ipod cause i hear its better sound.  So since i just rambled on whats better the 5.5 gen or the newer 7 gen? lol sorry im new to this whole thing im kinda gettin gin to the high quality sound a bit after having a crappy skullcrushers lol

Hello!! Although some people say the iPod Video is better than the iPod Classic in terms of sound quality, you have to consider other things such as the huge difference in capacity and warranty.

lol thx for the reply, i kinda geek so if i can fix it myself that be cool,i d be getin git off ebay cause im tight on money lol.but sound quality base would be nice lol if i got the ipod video 5.5gen id get the 80g one. My 8g itouch has not been close to filled up yet im still working on getting music and making my master libary (that sounds so weird lol), and would the sound quality change from getiing the 30 pin connecter to hook up to either the headphones or a amp over just headphones or amp in the headphone jack

The amp would definitely give you a "fuller" sound.

Would it be worth rockboxing for EQ? I myself don't use EQs so I can't comment on that.

Portable amp?I was thinking of the mini3.

EQs are good, but I don't mess a lot with them.

A thread on the pa2v2 (http://www.head-fi.org/t/192972/what-s-your-beef-with-pa2v2)
It doesn't look very pleasant.

Sounds like we have a similar setup.  I have an iPod video 30gb, ATH M50's, and the PA2V2 amp, using ALAC files and I'm also just starting this wonderful hobby.  So far I'm quite happy with the setup :)

To add, get the thicker version ipods as you can upgrade the hdd easier(more space in case you want to get a multi-platter drive, not sure if they exist though).  Something to consider.

I just upgraded my 80GB iPod 5.5 to 120GB and the new drive is actually running faster on Rockbox than the old one. For sound quality and rockbox customization options I'd recommend the 5.5g.

I dont really understand what basis people have to say that ipod video (5g, 5,5g) is better than ipod classic (6g, 7g). The ipod classic shows a MUCH flatter frequency response curve in the tests i've seen where as the ipod video has a bunch of roll off and sounds really treble biased.

I looked around at the freq. response curves for various loads and found that for 32 ohm or higher load the ipod's headphone jack will be nearly flat and the only roll off is minor around 30hz and lower. I went with the ipod classic 7th gen.

That makes me feel better. Its nice to hear that apple used a more pure audio circuit in the 6th gen (and probably 7th gen) instead of putting a bunch of stuff, vinnie said. I was gonna go with the ipod LOD going to an external amp anyways, so all the low-end concern I have will be more or less eliminated.
