I would consider using Rockbox with my ipod+amp for the crossfeed feature, but i'm not sure if its worth the massive hit on battery life.

Latest Rockbox build does not consume much battery if you stick with lossy files. Anything between 192 to 224 should be alright.
And YES, Rockbock will still allow you to use lineout. In fact a lot of iMod owners are running Rockbox > FLAC > Lineout setup (but this configuration is a battery chomper
