MediaFour is out with a RC version of the upcoming XPlay2 that promises full iPod functionality in a drag-and-drop format via the Explorer. It also has a few added features that some users might like, most notably its WMA->MP3 on-the-fly cross-encoder. This thread is little old but still the most appropriate.

I want to know if it is possible to copy music to ipod just by copying the files into iPod i.e. do I need to use any extra software just to get files into ipod.

Yes, you need compatible software to transfer music files that you want to play on your iPod. However, you can use the iPod as a removable hard disk to transport or back up files.

With regards to the earlier discussion, there is a thread on Hydrogenaudio.org about integrating EAC (for ripping and tagging) with iTunes (for encoding in Apple Lossless or AAC) which can be found here. This works rather well and is much faster than ripping using iTunes with error checking on many CD-R/RW drives, especially Plextor.
