Maybe. I even bought the Zune 120GB recently (having had such fond memories of the 80GB), but as soon as I heard it against the Touch again, I knew my ears had 'outgrown' the Zune. Mind you, I remember it took me a while to get used to the Touch sound signature after my first Zune. I wasn't that hooked on it at the beginning. but it grew on me

I've been trying out a Touch 2G and I am impressed with the sound quality. Straight from the headphone jack into my PFEs (with grey filters and large silicon tips) the sound is very enjoyable. Oh, thats on the No EQ setting.

I've been using a Sansa Clip (and had a Fuze before) and the Touch I think sounds quite a bit better. I can't say definitively as I don't think I have any of the same music on both (highest AAC level on the Touch, 320kbps MP3 on the Sansa, but still). The bass seems punchier and the rest seems a bit nicer as well (space opened up more, a bit of sparkle in the upper ranges). I might be crazy, as I know most people say the Touch is a bit on the cold/analytical side, but it actually sounded a tad warm (compared to my other sources, though).

From a pure sound quality standpoint, I would definitely be pleased. Now I think I'll look into finding a thin amp (T4?) and go through the lineout since the consensus is that its better (know anyone that can make a nice small LOD?). That should be even better. Hmm, do any of the extended battery options have a dock pass through?

iPod touch 2g is great. I currently use an iPhone 3G paired with a C&C XO amp, and it sounds great. Just try to use Apple Lossless, as opposed to mp3's for optimal sound quality. Plus a Touch also functions as your PDA/Internet Device/App Store/etc. Can't go wrong.

Both have their strengths, but no way is the Zune head and shoulders better sounding than the Touch. Smeared? What? Not a chance. Owning both is a much better gauge than listening to 6 tracks encoded at 128k, AAC or not. Yes, a very flawed test.

Plus, the Touch has features the Zune doesn't. Again, I like the Zune, but not any more than the Touch.

Funny you have to mention the features a PDA has over DAP with high storage. I've owned the iPod Touch before look at my first posts on this site. At first this device was the best thing ever than I found myself not interested in any of the apps anymore and just focusing on raw media. Then it hit me the iPod Touch is not for the media enthusiasts, it is for the show offs and gadget nerds. It was until I got a Zune 120 that I realized I never once heard a lossless song. I always ripped my music to 192kbps mp3 when I synced it to my iPod Touch because it was only 8gb's. I then completely ran out of space even after deleting all apps and was thinking about buying a iPod Classic 120gb but found out the Zune 120 offers a heck of a lot more for the same price. All the features of the iPhone and ipod Touch will quickly wear off and it will hit you 32gb's is not enough. I have a music collection of 5,000+ songs which is about 75gb's.....iPod Touch is completely out of the question with my music collection alone not including my 25gb's of video. Everyone who mentions the iPod Touch having more features than my Zune 120 in real life easily shuts up when I mention I have 120gb's of storage compared to your.....ummmm....8gb's? Have fun watching 2 movies and 200 songs ripped at the lowest quality to conserve space along with your apps.

. If the ZuneHD comes out in 120gb's.....the iPod Touch is dead....maybe not because people are blinded and often buy the lower quality product...No wonder the iPod sells more than the Zune. The same analogy can be applied with high end earphones.

But it seems to go no longer than 9-10 hours using just music, with most of the bells and whistles turned off. I may swap it out at the Genius Bar next week, since it's less than a year old. Otherwise, I think it's my best player, and would really be great if it has a custom EQ, as the presets suck, except for the acoustic, which I use on occasion with my Westone 3s.

something is definitely wrong with your touch then if it gets 9-10 hours. i have not tested mine properly but i get at least 30 hours. my 1st gen got up to 28 hours on a 22 rated battery. apple usually underrate their battery life in the ipod line.

im sure the zune hd will be great, but so too will the current touch 2G and the next touch 3G - which by the way may or may not have 3G capabilities - rumour has it that it may have such a radio and that you will be able to get contract with a company to use it also as a voip phone!

microsoft have to make the zune hd very good and i hope they do. i also wish they would drop the requirement for only windows use and bring it to europe, asia and well, break out of north america.

those markets would probably swallow it up but they have no exposure and currently, a sort of lackluster design is holding the zune back as it does not offer enough difference from its competitors to warrant selling your old stuff unless you are either:

a) a microsoft fanboy
b) hate apple - or the popularity of the ipod
c) think that by buying something different, you are different.

it is a nice piece of hardware and sound quite decently but had better bring something real to the table in the new hd version as well as get some marketing if it is to sell.

Hey, if you only need one player, fine. But I use multiple players for different things. I use the Zune primarily at home, in its dock, to play through my two home audio systems, both good ones. Makes an excellent music DB for home. But SQ-wise, to me the Touch is just better. So I move music off and on my 16GB Touch if need be. Doesn't take all that much effort. Not many times I need all 13,000 music tracks in my possession to enjoy myself. In fact, half of the tracks on the Zune never even get played, because who has that kind of time?

Your logic is faulty unless you are married to the idea of a single player. Then, maybe the storage is important. I can't speak for the iPod Classic in terms of SQ compared to the Zune, but the Touch 2G (did you own the 2G or the 1G, not sure) just sounds better to me (and others as we can see).

I am limited using the apps, but I do use the weather, movie times, some of the easier to play games, etc. And I hardly ever watch video on any of my players, since I have a netbook for that when I am traveling.

Glad you are so happy with your Zune120. My Zune80 is nice too, but when it comes to pure listening enjoyment, I prefer the Touch. To call its sound sig smeared (you shifted your argument from SQ to feature/storage it seems) is just silly.

trying to hold in excitement. i simply am so happy to have a touch. i use it as an all-purpose writing tool and book reader mostly (also for music listening of course). it simply is fabulous.

with os 3.0 coming, it will be much better as an all-purpose tiny computer and as a nice player - hopefully line in recording (using external mics and amps too).

i did also love the sound of the 1st gen touch though it was a softer sound that i think works better for jazz and vocal but it hissed much more than touch 2g.

I've used the Zune & iPod Touch/iPhone/160 GB iPod Classic. If storage is you concern, go with an iPod Classic 160 or 120 GB. The Zune so far has been extremely unimpressive to me, especially in terms of aesthetics. The sound quality is just as good if not better on the Touch/Iphone 3G/iPod Classic. Who knows what the fate of the Zune will be. In terms of quality of sound, it might be less than or equal to the iPod/Touch. So again, the Touch or iPod classic will be a better investment. I have a 16 GB iPhone 3G, and I love it. But I do hate the limited storage, because I run out of space all the time with my lossless format. You might want to consider a 32 GB touch. I'm hoping a 32 GB iPhone comes out this summer. It will be like flies on shi*%!

p.s. Why would they make a turd colored Zune.

there will definitely be a new iphone this summer whether a mere bump to 32 GB or a proper new model is yet unknowns but probably by September at latest, we will see a 3rd gen touch and iphone - supporting HD output, faster video processors and hopefully similar audio output internals!

The touch 2g is better sounding to me then the zune also, a little fuller with a bigger soundstage. Plus you don't get HD noise with sensitive iems

What Zune were you using? The Zune 120 is very sexy, the Zune 30's are ugly. You need high quality earphones or very good ears with low quality earphones to see how crappy iPod's sound compared to a Zune. Everywhere where a Zune is compared to an iPod the sound quality of the Zune beats it...
