. . . i.e: the iriver HDs are ugly, the iPods are not . . .

I'm not getting into this idiotic little dap war thing going on, but I must say, this is quite a nonsense line. You speak of good + bad design (asthetics mainly) in a defined way, but those are only in your opinion, definitely not set in stone. I find neither the IHP or ipod ugly. They are both appealing in ther own rights. Who universally defines which is the more attractive of the two? You? Of course not. No one does. Looks are subjective. The fact that there is exists a known preference b/w the two means that neither is truly above the other. Otherwise only one would always be chosen if specifically for looks (disr. other factors). If I asked 50 different people which looked better, I doubt they'd all choose the same model. Nothing is simple when it comes to this stuff.

Bah, Microsoft is worse than Apple, in general. Just worse in a different way.

Apple is annoying because they create this mystique that their products are inherently superior, and that if you don't agree you are some type of unenlightened slob. Futhermore, while their software may be cutting edge and such, their hardware prices are so amazingly ridiculous as to not even warrant serious consideration. Especially since they use fairly standardised products in their computers. Then you take into account that, despite being so much more expensive, their hardware is a lot slower too, well, then it really doesn't look like such a good value.

Microsoft is annoying because they're this giant monopoly that flings their weight about left and right, often illegally, and forces themselves upon absolutely everything. Not only that, but their software is, as a rule, bloated and buggy, which doesn't foster much compassion towards them when they pull such stunts.

Oh, and businesses get Windows because that's what a lot of applications are written for, that is what the IT guys and such are most prepared to deal with, that is what a lot of the infrastructure is based on, and because that is what people know how to use. Changing would simply be too much of a hassle to bother unless there was a pretty compelling reason to do so.

Many businesses, especially governments, are in fact changing to linux. Of course, linux has a whole host of issues to adoption as well, and a different set of trials and tribulations. Still, at least people are trying to offer a good alternative to Windows. Maybe eventually something will come of it. OSX wouldn't be around if it wasn't for unix, so clearly there is some movement underfoot.

Just curious, but what is your point? Opinions can be wrong. Furthermore, some opinions are better than others.
