I use my Rockbox on my iPod (+ amp via LOD) with ogg files, all replaygained. In Rockbox there's a pre-amp option with Replaygain; does having the pre-amp at -12db increase the iPods battery life? Obviously it will reduce the battery life of the amp as it has to do more amplifying, but my amp lasts a lot longer than my Rockboxed iPod! I thought maybe that as the iPod is putting out a reduced signal it would require less juice, but I also thought that perhaps the extra processing required to reduce the signal level would negate any power gains.

No, you misunderstand, the codec is irrelevant here - I was just giving some background info. Pre-amp battery effects is the point. Thanks anyway.

EDIT: the word from thr rockbox forums issss: no effect on battery life.

I got a new ipod mini battery from ipodjuice.com a while back and it holds a charge so long I don't have any trouble with it wearing down too fast.
