Does it work as a basic line out dock since it bypasses the headphone jack? Or does it have some crappy amp by itself? Sorry if this question seems really dumb.

You mean the docking station that has an fm transmitter built in? It will give a line out signal.

I assume you are referring to the wired remote control that also gives you radio capability. I doesn't give you true line out capability. However, people have reported here that the quality of the audio out to a headphone is improved. I agree with them and think it is somewhat better.

If it plugs in the bottom it will be a line out signal. If its the type that plugs into the headphone and control port it will be a headphone out.
