just recently got my hands on an ipod photo, that needs a new hdd
was considering the rockbox plus CF card route

dont currently own an amp to go down the ipod route.
Wondering if the headphone out is any good? or if its better off just to sell it off to a headfi-er who wants an imod.

Yes, the Headphone out is great.
Personaly, it's my prefer ipod.
Headphone out is great and i use it with the soft "Eupod" to "boost" the sound.
The line out isn't the best, i prefer Ipod video and Iphone line out.
So for portable and outside use, it's my favourite Ipod.

Headphone out is pretty good, but slightly hissy. I like my Clip+ a little bit better. Rockbox works great on the Photo.

The Photo is great, I love the SQ of it. Paired w/a full sized set of cans it sounds great to me. And w/RockBox it sounds even better (Both w/HP out).

With IEM's, someone else would have to answer that for you.

I have one and have just been doing some comparisons, found my Touch to sound much better. Also took it into the Apple store and found the Classic to be better than my 4g, but not as good as the Touch.

I was thinking of getting a 5/5.5g with a 240gb hd but now wondering if unamped it sounds like my 4g because me no like.

I compared these HP out with JH13Pros.
