I am in desperate need of a semi-portable source with a digital output, preferably one that can deal with AAC and apple lossless. At the same time, I have an old first gen ipod that does not get much use anymore. Would it be feasible to do the following:

Mount the electronics in a larger case.

Replace hdd with a larger one

Larger battery (I can get hands on li-polymer cells)

Toslink output (this is the most important one)

As long as we are on the topic, can I add a toslink out to my ti-book (without adding a usb/firewire/pcmcia/network device)?

'Semi-portable' doesn't mean walking around the house with a Airport Express and an extention cord does it?

Yeah, I actually do this.

HD replacement hasn't been attempted much on the iPod. I would be curious about this, but the dearth of info out there would scare me off. The 1G used Toshiba's first 1.8" (then only 1.8") drive, so I wonder how generic the drivers are.
