As I sit here, trying to decide what music to leave off of my 8GB iPod Nano, I find myself wondering if it might not have been better to pick up an iPod Classic instead.

My main concern about buying a hard drive based iPod is that I have heard that the interface can be pokey on them, especially while it waits for the hard drive to spin up. I know a lot of people here have hard drive based iPods and I have wondering if anyone can tell me how much of a problem this is.

Thanks!

I've got an iPod Classic 80, and to be honest the "lag" in the menus is only occasional. When it does happen it is for less than a second, so it doesn't really bother me. Once Apple released any of the firmwares after 1.0.3(i think thats what is was called) it has been smooth sailing for me. i am totally satisfied with my iPod classic and do not regret its purchase.

Using the Cover Flow shows a bit of the lag, but I don't even like using it to tell you the truth. I just go through the Album option. But the lag isn't a big issue. I was about to walk out with something other than the 80gb Classic when I bought it just because of all the 'LAG" talk but I'm glad I did buy it. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 8gb myself for a portable setup. I'd like to keep the 80gb at home.

I do get the "lag" so to speak and while it doesn't always last very long it still bugs me from time to time. I have the 160g so the lag can be up to a couple seconds at times. Sometimes I also worry about it breaking since it's not solid state like your nano.

I own both a Nano 2nd gen and a 160 gig Classic.
There is a lag in the Classic, although not very long, long enough to notice the difference with the lack of in the Nano.
Both serve different purpose for me:
the Nano for exercise and podcasts/mp3 files.
the Classic for Apple Lossless
I need both!

I totally agree with your setup. Makes sense. Nano for MP3s and Classic for Lossless. I need to get my hands on one of those Nano asap. I don't want to push my 80gb Classic to the limit by mistreating it.

I've filled about half of my Classic with a couple of movies and mainly Lossless but I really don't experience bad lag. And I've filled it with photos and album covers also.

Thanks for the feedback. Doing some searching, most people seem to notice the biggest lag when using Coverflow, but since I don't embed cover art and don't use Coverflow, it sounds like I would have a good experience.

Thanks.

^ Not really. The lag is still there. If you're like me, and the little nuances bother you, that will definitely annoy the crap outta you. yeah, it's less than and up to one second, but still, it's annoying.

FWIW, you shouldn't be thinking about what songs to leave OFF your iPod, you should be thinking about what songs you want ON there. 8gb worth of 192AAC is a LOT of music, and that's ALOT of hours. Think about "what will I likely want to listen to this time around..." And then, really, it's not bad at all, and you'll find it's harder to fill up, rather than to figure which ones you want to leave off....

Flash based ftw.

I'm struggling with what music to leave off my 160GB Classic - can't imagine making those decisions on an 8GB Nano.

I'd go big - the lag isn't that bad on my unit & is mostly apparent with CoverFlow and even that if you pause for a second, fills in nicely. Overall I've been quite pleased with the Classic...

Thanks for all the responses. I think that, for now, I will stay with my 8GB Nano and see what happens later in the year with the iPod models.

Thanks again to all.
