I have an Ipod 5.5G with Rockbox installed. With the OEM software, I get a hiss with IEMs. With Rockbox, the hiss is gone.

Anybody know what about Rockbox does this?

Whatever it is, why wouldn't Apple do the same?

I must be missing something, because I would be extremely surprised if a bunch of open-source DIY programmers (Rockbox devs) know something about Ipod hardware/settings/etc that Apple doesn't.

Hey George,

Good question... I never realized the standard firmware had a hiss until you mentioned it and I rebooted to the standard firmware. Then I booted back to rockbox, and you're right... it's gone.

Checkout this rockbox thread:

Someone brings it up in the first page, and then it's discussed in detail in the third and fourth pages... but not even the devs seem to come up with a true conclusion.

Thanks for the link, George, but there isn't really an answer in that thread.

Someone must have an answer

Hiss from the headphone output on my 5G iPod isn't eliminated with Rockbox but it is significantly reduced.
