My 160GB ipod classic will not sync it instead will give me a message listing "unknown error(-48). I have spent a fair amount of time transferring about 12000 songs from cd to this unit and I am concerned. Are there solutions to this problem that do not involve a sledgehammer? Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Try using a different sync cable. That can make a difference. If that doesn't work, try reformatting and reload all the music from your backup.

Thanks! I contacted Apple and I am being walked through reloading programs on my mac and restoring my ipod. At the moment I am backing up all this music. Wish me luck.
