I have an Ipod Mini + mini dock, and a 3G Ipod + dock, and a Sik Din.
For kicks hooked them all up to my preamp (musical fidelity cd-pre-24),
and cranked up my speakers (silver 9i's) through some 50w solid state
monoblocks (Marantz, .01% thd). I could detect no noticable difference
in noise between the docks and the Din, in fact it was all very quiet. I'm
curious under what circumstances do the "shortcomings" of the docks
line outs show themselves?
