Would the line out on my ipod dock give me a high quality results when connected to an amp? I'm not sure it it would be better then the headphone jack or if I should just get a DAC and for go the ipod. I am looking to get good results without spending much.

The line out from iPod will sound noticeably better than HP out but a good DAC using your PC as source will sound better than iPod...IMO, IME. I assume you mean portable DAC/amp ??

Line out > headphone out, when connected to line level amp. But digital out is even better but for ipod that means iwadia, pretty expensive and a bit pointless. I'd look at 3.5" hard drive based dedicated media player.

Many head-fiers will claim a significant improvement by using an LOD over the iPods headphone jack. My opinion is that the difference is quite small. Another opinion is that most DACs (even low cost dacs that are integrated with a portable amp), playing lossless or high bitrate mp3s will offer an improvement over an iPod.

Opinions on these issues vary widely and there is a huge amount of stuff on head-fi. Use the search function, and report back in 2-3 weeks after you have absorbed the relevant material.

I will be getting a new amp soon and I will test it with a dock to see how good it sounds. If im not content then I will go for the DAC.

i'm waiting for an ibasso D10 Cobra which has both options-Dac or Amp

hopefully i will have it at the end of this month.

I will get either a gilmore lite, or RSA HR-2 should do the trick.

I might be purchasing a LOD to connect my iPod into my Gilmore Lite. If I do I will post impressions between going from Line-out vs. Headphone out.
