Hello new here and wanted a recommendation on weather to stay with my current setup of ipod classic and fiio e17 or to buy a x5. Cans I use are hd598's and dt770 pro 250 ohms.

The FiiO X3 apparently has the same DAC/headphone amp as the E17 (although tweaked for some improvement). My understanding is that the X5 is supposedly even a little better.

Should you upgrade? It would certainly seem more convenient to me to carry only one device. But if you are trying to find out about how the X5 sounds, you should probably research and ask questions in this thread as almost no one owns one yet. They were just released.

It was my understanding that the Fiio E17 takes an analog signal (aux in) from the ipod classic, thus the Fiio's dac won't come into play in this combination...correct me if I'm wrong

You right, the iPod Classic connects to the E17 with an analog connection.
