I bought an 80g classic four days ago and have approx. 50 hours of use with it. I am detecting distortion on several tracks. This is in direct comparison with my 30g vid. This distortion occurs with both the headphone and line outs. Very disappointing. I tried it with different amps, s/s and tubed along with various headphones and distortion can be heard on all equipment used.

Has anyone else experienced this??

See my iPod thread. I think the overall soundstage of the Classic is much better than the 5g, but yes, there is distortion.

I actually have very little distortion with my 30g pod. Its a shame though, I also like the overall sound of the classic but it is boxed up and will be back at the Apple store tomorrow. I'll have to find something else to do with my 100 apple dollars.

If it was consistent across all tracks, it would be the player, but if it's just a few, it's probably the tracks themselves. Have you tried normalizing the tracks down? It might just be your tracks overdriving.

I won't buy the Classic, as much as I'd love the capacity. See:

As for distortion, I missed that, but try turning Sound Check on/off. It messes with volume levels, badly, and inconsistently.
