You can test this by creating a few 10 minute silent tracks and encoding them lossless, and playing them back.

Exchange your iPod for a new one.

Apple have not fixed this problem yet.People just keep exchanging till they find a unit that doesn't suffer.

Is it possible to go to an Apple store if you didn't buy the iPod there, and get a new unit?

I just discovered (today!) an audible, high-pitched whine when the HDD is being accessed, but my iPod is a month old and I didn't buy it at the Apple store. I think I'd like to get it replaced, although the noise is very very faint, I still notice it now ... Then again, my iPod is in PERFECT condition cosmetically, and I don't want a refurbished unit ...

Suggestions?

I just encoded silence in Apple Lossless. I used one of the 12 or 13, five second silent tracks at the beginning of the Korn album, Follow the Leader. When I play it, no static. None. No matter how loud. Is this evidence that I am not having the problem in question?

Also, maybe I was hearing what Justanotheruser described. I will try the high quality AAC thing and see if that is it.

Lastly, this shows my naievety about the recording industry, but doesn't a mic in a perfectly quiet room still pick up a slight amount of "static" or "hiss?" A mic in a room with people moving and making other noises should be generating more of this (is it called...) white noise? I keep thinking that this might be what I am hearing because, as I said, I have to turn it up pretty loud to hear it.
