My 80 gb ipod freezes randomly while playing, in doing so it stops playing music and makes a rattling mechanical sound from the internal drive, and does not respond to button presses. I have to reset it to regain control.

Already tried a restore but didn't help. It's still under warranty.
Should I get it replaced?

Man, I'd be back in the store in a heartbeat. Mechanical noise from an iPod would freak me out.

I would definetely take it back...sounds like your hard drives going out. I took mine back (CC) and got a new one a couple weeks ago.
