However, MK1231GAL you've mentioned will not work with 5th gen (and anything but 6th gen and zune 80/120).
From what i have heard, that drive is for some reason incompatible with ATA, so it will only work with devices it was designed for, namely, ipod classic (6th gen) and zune 120 (and zune 80 as well). It will not even work as a portable hdd if put in corresponding hdd enclosure.
However, other hard drives should work with 5th gen, and there is another slim 120gb hdd: Samsung HS12YHA.

What do you mean by "overpriced"? ~$100 is a normal price for 120gb.

it all depends on what kind of storage you are talking about. $100 for 120gb is way overpriced for desktop type storage; $100 for 120gb can said to be impossible if you are talking about SSDs (at least true for this year). The bottom line is, we all knows 1.8" HDD sucks in term of R/W performance and $/GB, they are good for nothing except for their size and price (compare to SSDs of same class)

I'm talking about 1.8" storage.
That would be silly to call 1.8" hdds "overpriced" because 3.5" are cheaper, don't you think?

Nobody needs R/W performance on their portable devices, and i cannot see how it "sucks" in price for portable use.

Could you point me out to a place that sells them for that price? I'm looking at rapidrepair.com and the 120gb samsung drive is $190. 240gb drive is $300!

I'm supposed to go for drives with Zif connectors, right?
