ipod 4g sound problems?

I returned my first 20g iPod that I bought from Bestbuy. I then ordered and received second one from apple online store, hoping they had better ones, but it still had problems. So I just returned it.

I recently again bought one (my 3rd) from Bestbuy, but the same problem remained. I gotta tell you, I have a pretty sensitive hearing. I assume other people don't notice the noise too well or they just don't care. I don't want to end up like the other guy who returned his ipod 4 times, although I'm getting close.

What should I do? Exchange it or keep it? Am I being too paranoid about this?

I'm "the other guy". I say exchange it again until you get one that works. Period. Best Buy simply sends 'em back to Apple. Apple is the one who should be eating it - not you, me or Best Buy. When I looked, they had a case of 10 to 15 of 'em in stock in their electronics case. And I was prepared to go through them one by one.........

The payoff is I now have one that works correctly, no static no whirr. One small rub though - the stupid headphone jack must not be quite physically right. When I plug in headphones, the plug doesn't "snap" in the normal way. It just sort of mushes in with no clear finishing click. Almost feels like it's not all the way connected and could slip out easily, but so far it has not. Since I mostly use the line-out, it surely isn't worth trying yet again to get another one as I may end up with one of the noise beauties. Sheesh, for such a transcendent player it sure is a pain in the ass.

I picked up my 4g iPod the day they arrived at the apple store. It has the static problems, but wasn't bad when I only had the EX70's. They are sometimes very apparent with my Sensa's, and they are not too bad with the ER-6i's. I didn't want to bother exchanging mine until I got to used my gf's 3g iPod extensively and it does not have any weird noise switching between songs, just pure music.

So I called the store and they said it *might* be a "defect" and they would replace it under warranty. I think I'm gonna do that and won't stop until I find a good one. Problem is though, they are only bad with the Sensa's, obviously I can't let them use them. I don't really want them to use the 6i's either. So how would they tell if my iPod had this problem?

Another reason I didn't want to exchange it is because I will now have to buy an external hard drive to transfer all my music over before I return it, and then move them back. I wanted a reliable backup for my music anyway, so it has to be done.

oh yeah, I'm gonna wait til I get myself a 4g case before I go exchange it.

Andrew,
Although it was very easy to hear the "defective" sound with my e5's, I could also pick it out with the apple earbuds. The question is however, can someone else hear it, particularly in a noisy store enviornment. In my three return experience, it didn't seem to matter.

My 4g iPod completely died yesterday, wouldn't go into disk mode even manually. So I got a new one, the noise is not as bad, I'll use it for a couple of days to decide if I want to replace it again. Ironically, I just ordered a 160GB external harddrive to backup my music so I could exchange my iPod the day before it died... Now I'm in the process of ripping all my music again, but all of them in apple lossless this time.

I am not impressed with the quality of the 4g iPods. I think the previous generations were built in Taiwan, these new ones are now made in China.

it's truly incredible how many defects are inherent in apple's products.
