i picked up my 4g this afternoon and haven't had time to play with it yet...i'm going to see if i can replicate the sound problems tomorrow...

I tried to reproduce their experiment.. I use nothing but AL to begin with. I can't notice any problems, and I skipped through dozens and tracks, forward and backwards.. didn't seem to to hear any problems.

However, I probably got an unit that was functioning properly. If you notice that type of problem, you should return for an exchange right away.

Could it be a malfunction of the audible "click" feedback feature, in which the sound of the click is fed through the headphone jack?

sigh...mine is affected. it whirrs, then there's an audible crackling sound like a bad needle on a record and then the song starts to play. when i skip to the next track, same thing happens. only on apple lossless files for some reason. haven't tested w/the dock and line out yet. just got my 40 gig yesterday from the apple store in arden mall in sacramento...it's going back to them later this week...seems like a lot of them are affected from what i gather on the comments at the ipodlounge. may not be that big of a problem for apple as not many use apple lossless, but it could also mean a lot of returns and exchanges...

UPDATE: the problem is even more insidious. it occurs whenever the ipod needs to access the hard drive for some search, whether it be accessing the new AL file, the new album (happened to me as i switched from an album of AL files to an album of 320 mp3 files - only for that first track, though), or even while searching for all my contacts. while it happens consistently when skipping for AL tracks, it also occurs in other instances, which tells me it isn't something about AL files, per se, rather there are hard drive problems.

also, are you supposed to physically be able to feel the hard drive rotating while holding the ipod? i don't know how much is considered within the normal tolerable limits.

will run more tests...anyone else getting the same thing?

Does sound like your iPod has a problem. Go back to Apple store for an exchange as soon as you can. Good thing is, if an Apple store is nearby, you can get replaced immediately...

The hard drive spinning has always been that way. You can feel it even on 1G iPod. So don't worry about it, you're supposed to be able to feel some of it.

lindrone, have you tried listening using different headphones - both high and low ohm headphones? i put the ipod on the dock and hooked up my ra1 to the line out and there were no weird noises...tried my rs1 out of the headphone out and i couldn't replicate the problem...then tried my er4p and voila, there it is again. put on the 4s adapter and no problems. is the 4p that sensitive? i thought it was the same sensitivity as the grados.

can someone else try listening to their 4g with the er4p (or the e5) and see if they get the strange sounds?

I've tried all the high sensitively, low ohm headphones I've got.. just no problems. I don't have any thing that's high ohm anymore.. hehehehe..

I think it's really a mechanical problem that your iPod has, and mine happens to have escaped without a problem.

Replaced immediately worked out to over a two hour wait at the Short Hills apple store in NJ.
After being told to go to the check-out line for exchanges, and wasting half an hour there (do all apple stores have only two cash registers?

), I was then told I had to sign up for an appointment with a "genius" to prove the ipod defective. Wednesday afternoon wait for an appointment: one hour fifty minutes. I swear to god, you came [this] close to seeing me on the news!

Anyway the "genius" had no knowledge of these interference issue's (by the way, you would be better off using space aliens as a reference, than mention any web source other than apple). This, even though there were three other opened 40gig ipod's on the counter. He offered to make an exchange, without much further ado, but I decided to cut my losses at this point and let apple work out their quality control problems on somebody else's clock. One more apple store return for me and I'll be looking for bail, not an upgrade!
