Just for fun, I charged my very old (10+years) 2nd Gen Ipod (10Gb) and loaded it with music. Which was not easy cos' it takes a firewire interface.
Plugged it into my Sennheiser HD598s (un-amped) and was quite surprised to find that the sound on this device was a fair bit more enjoyable than my 10 year newer Iphone 4S ! Not saying that it is technically better ... but certainly not as clinical / thin sounding and much more pleasing and punchy.
My daughter listened to the same music on both devices and agrees with me.
Mind you it is about an inch thick, so a good deal less portable and you cannot get Apps/e-mail on it.
Am I mistaken ... or are these devices SQ getting worse (rather than better)... as time progresses ?
